Archbishop Ntagali Petitions Principal Judge Over West Ankole Diocese Row

By Serestiino Tusingwire

The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Stanley Ntagali, has petitioned the Principal Judge Yorokam Bamwine to intervene in the case filed by some dissenting Canons of West Ankole Diocese.

According to Archbishop Ntagali’s petition dated October 17, he told the Principal Judge that the current situation in the management of the case against him has caused serious disruption in the leadership of the Church of Uganda.

He is asking the Principal Judge to ensure the Archbishop and the Church of Uganda as a whole get a fair hearing.

Archbishop Ntagali says he took over the Episcopal jurisdiction of the vacant West Ankole Diocese as mandated by the church’s constitution and canons in order to perform the Episcopal and administrative functions to the diocese and to the Christians pending the election, consecration and enthronement of a new bishop.

He wants the Principal Judge to review last week’s High Court’s decision, which halted him from taking over the diocese until the main case challenging his takeover is resolved.

On October 13, Justice Lydia Mugambe of the High Court stopped the inauguration of the Archbishop’s Commissary, which he had appointed to oversee the diocese and the election process for the new bishop.

The judge said the inauguration of the commissary be stayed until otherwise directed by the court and that the diocesan secretary, Rev Arthur Atwine, in the interim should take charge of the diocese.
