Besigye who visited a number of mass grave sited in the district found the Makulubita site locked but his supporters decided to break the padlock.

Besigye was campaigning in Luweero, a district which was the centre of the 1981-86 bush war that brought president Museveni to power. Besigye was part of the war.

He noted that it is because of the 1980 rigged elections that many fighters died in bush in pursuit for a democratic society.

“We are now in another election with a heavy dark cloud of vote rigging, of intimidation, of violence hanging over their graves. And that is why we come to rededicate ourselves to the cause for which they laid down their lives that they may not die in vain,” Besigye said.

While campaigning in Northern Uganda, Independent presidential candidate Amama Mbabazi visited a number of mass graves where Lord Resistance Army (LRA) war victims were buried

However, Mbabazi wasn’t allowed to access all mass grave sites, on a number of occasions, heavily-armed police blocked him from accessing monuments.
