Defiant Makerere Dons Refuse to Return University Vehicles
By Serestino Tusingwire
Some members of the Makerere University staff have adamantly refused to return university vehicles despite being given three deadlines by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Ddumba Ssentamu.
“Some Vehicles are still pending. I am glad some staff members are parking at different lots, this is because one parking lot at estates and works department cannot accommodate all the vehicles,” Ddumba said.
The first deadline was on November 5 and no vehicle was returned.
The second deadline was of November 7 and this saw only 8 vehicles returned.
Staff appealed for more time and the deadline was extended to Friday 18 November, but up to date all the 375 vehicles of staff have not been returned.
The directive to return vehicles came after president Museveni closed University following the persistent strike from the university academic staff over salary arrears amounting to Shs28bn.
It is not yet clear when the university will be re-opened, since the visitation committee that was appointed to probe the university is yet to start its work and is expected to finish it in 3-months time.
