FDC Bosses Clash Over MPs’ Shs150m Cars
FDC's National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday ordered the party president, Maj Gen (rtd) Mugisha Muntu, and Mr Nandala Mafabi the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, to hold a one-on-one meeting to discuss and iron out their differences.
FDC Bosses Clash Over MPs’ Shs150m Cars
Uganda’s main opposition party, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) leaders have sharply disagreed over parliament’s plan to give the country’s lawmakers Shs150m each to purchase a vehicle.
According to our sources at Najjanankumbi where the party headquarters are located, FDC MPs do not have any problem with accepting the money despite opposition from the party President Mugisha Muntu.
“Muntu believes the country is broke and cannot afford to gift the lawmakers with the expensive cars. However, members of parliament from his party don’t seem to agree with,” our source intimated to us this afternoon citing a heated debate on Monday during a meeting convened by the FDC leader.
Rebecca Kadaga, the Speaker of Parliament recently announced that each of the 427 MPs will pocket Shs150m to buy cars to travel to their constituencies, an announcement that drew anger from the public. The venture that is set to get underway in next month, will cost the taxpayers a minimum of Shs64b. However, there have been reports that the money could increase to shs2oom.
Our source revealed that the Leader of opposition in parliament (LoP), Winnie Kiiza, chief whip Ssemujju Ibrahim Nganda, and secretary general Nathan Nandala Mafabi. Others were, Nabilah Naggayi Sempala, Mubarak Munyagwa, Wafula Oguttu and Ingrid Turinawe are some of the leaders who attended Monday’s meeting.
