Hold credible elections— Kidega

The Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Daniel Kidega has appealed to Uganda and Tanzania to ensure that elections are “held in a credible manner.”

Hon. Kidega said that credible elections are essential in the democratic dispensation of the East African Community.

“Our appeal to the Partner States is to ensure that elections are held in a credible manner and that such fall within the ambits of constitutionalism and electoral laws,” Rt. Hon. Kidega said.

Rt. Hon. Kidega was speaking during a press conference held at the start of the First Meeting of the 4th Session of the 3rd Assembly, to be held at the Parliament of Uganda, on Monday, August 17, 2015. The Parliament of Uganda will host the Meeting between Aug. 17 – 28, 2015.

H.E President Yoweri Museveni is scheduled to address EALA sitting on Friday.

Tanzania is scheduled to hold its presidential and parliamentary elections in October 2015, while Uganda will hold similar elections early next year.

“I want to challenge the media as well to ensure effective and objective reporting. They must refrain from stirring emotions, but rather join in advocacy towards enhancing free, fair and credible elections,” Rt. Hon. Kidega said.

Kidega also said that there was need to fast track the ratification of the Peace and Security Protocol in the region to operationalize joint activities that will ensure peace in the region.

During their stay in Uganda, EALA Members of Parliament will carry out an outreach activity involving tree planting and address a rally in Gulu Municipality on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015.

EALA is also scheduled to debate the EAC Electronic Transactions Bill, 2014; and the EAC Creative Industries Bill, 2015; consider reports from its committees including one from the Communication Trade and Investment on Investment Strategies in the EAC Region
