Jailed UPC chairman Is Suffering from Some Infections — Mao

Jailed Gulu Uganda People’s Congress chairperson Mr Dan Oola Odiya who is on remand at Gulu Central Prison is suffering from some infections at Gulu police station, Democratic Party Chairman Norbert Mao has revealed

Mao visited Oola Odiya who doubles as party National Deputy Mobilizer in Dr Olara Otunu’s faction on Monday.

Odiya is facing treason and concealment of treason charges.

“Odiya looks well but he told us that due to the squalid conditions and poor sanitation at Gulu Police he got some infections,” Mao said after the visit.

“We spoke to the Deputy O/C of Gulu Prison Mr Kuboomu and asked him to ensure that Odiya has access to medical treatment urgently.”

Mao also said that a cell meant for four people is used to accommodate over 20 people.

“They have to ease themselves in containers within the crowded cell, exposing them to a variety of infections including venereal diseases and urinary tract infections,” he noted.

Mao promised to ensure that Mr Odiya meets a team of lawyers who will prepare his defence in court and ensure that the baseless charges concocted against him are dismissed.

Below is Mao’s full statement

After the joint press conference where we condemned the unlawful, highhanded and reckless manner in which our peace rally in Gulu was blocked, we went to Gulu Central Prison to visit Mr. Dan Oola Odiya the Gulu UPC chairperson who has been detained following the Opit attacks.

Odiya looks well but he told us that due to the squalid conditions and poor sanitation at Gulu Police he got some infections. We spoke to the Deputy O/C of Gulu Prison Mr. Kuboomu and asked him to ensure that Odiya has access to medical treatment urgently.

In Gulu Police a cell meant for four people is used to accommodate over 20 people! They have to ease themselves in containers within the crowded cell, exposing them to a variety of infections including venereal diseases and urinary tract infections.

On Friday we shall ensure that Mr. Odiya meets a team of lawyers who will prepare his defence in court and ensure that the baseless charges concocted against him are dismissed.

Concerning the odoriferous security saga and the charade being orchestrated under the guise of a purported armed rebellion whose poorly disguised intention is to frame opponents of the Museveni regime, I will publish a detailed analysis on my Facebook wall before the end of this week.

The contents will be shocking revelations that those who blocked the Gulu rally didn’t want us to say to our people. Guns will never silence us. No inducement or coercion shall prevent us from continuing to speak out and taking a stand for truth, justice and peace.
