Liberian President Commends Kadaga

The President of Liberia Hon. Elen Johnson Sirleaf has commended the Speaker of Parliament Rt Hon Rebecca Kadaga for her dedicated effort in promoting gender equality and women empowerment not only in Uganda but in the world.


President Johnson who was chairing a  high level thematic debate on Advancing Gender Equality and Empowerment of Women and Girls for a Transformative post-2015 Development Agenda,  further said that all men and women decision-makers must take the lead in ending the exclusion of women from decision-making bodies.

She said that they must fight for gender parity which facilitates the integration of gender perspectives into wider planning concerns.

Speaker Kadaga was a among the three panelist invited by the UN General Assembly  President Hon. Sam Kutesa, She  discussed a topic on achieving women and political empowerment by sharing experience of Uganda.

In her discussion, she   said that since the Constituent Assembly in Uganda, Women Parliamentarians have always struggled to put women’s welfare right from the planning to the budgetary stage and that is why there is no legislation or Bill tabled before Parliament without the Certificate of Gender Equity which facilitates the integration of gender perspectives into wider planning concerns.

Kadaga also said that all national planning and budget processes should outline the issue of gender equality.

In the same vein,  the Speaker in her capacity as the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians will  make three presentations at the Annual Consultation meetings of the Commonwealth National Women Machineries and the 13th Commonwealth Gender Plan of Action Monitoring group.

The theme for the UN Meeting is ‘Women’s Political Leadership with Beijing+20 and post 2015 Development Agenda’

The two side meetings organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations will take place at the Assembly Headquarters from  9th- 16th March 2015.
