MUK Unveils First Ever Varsity Awards

In a bid to improve on her public relations, Makerere University has unveiled the “Mak Varsity awards” in which it will recognize public personalities and organizations, its staff and students in awards dubbed, exceptional achievements.

The awards, to be held under the theme “Motivate to Inspire”, are a premiere university awards dedicated to rewarding and show casing talent of outstanding and committed personalities.

The award categories include; Teaching, Sports and Innovation, Creativity, Social, Achievement and Inspirational awards.

Any outstanding personality and current member of staff or current student at the university may be nominated for the annual awards event that will be held on 15th October,2015 in the university main hall.

While addressing journalists yesterday at the university council room, main building, the dean of students Cyriaco Kabagambe defended the university observing that it cannot be always on the positive side ever.

“We are regrettable for the bad things about the university but we are good people. This project I believe, will improve on the image of the university,” he said.

The  project coordinator Paul Mugwanya explained  that the broad criteria for the awards includes exceptional achievement in any arena, a substantive contribution which has enhanced the reputation of the University, and examples of exceptional achievement by staff include sporting success and leadership of a community project.

“We therefore call upon every student, staff, alumni and the entire public to join us as we rebrand our institution. We are the institution, our predecessors left it and its us to make them proud wherever they are,” Added the guild president Bala David Bwiruka.

The Criteria for the Award includes exceptional achievement in any arena, notable endeavor which has made a difference to the University, and a substantive contribution which has enhanced the reputation of the University.

The Academic institution will also award activity which has had a noticeably positive impact for students, staff or the local community as well as an individual achievement or sustained achievement over a period of time.

Exceptional achievement by staff includes sporting success, leadership of a community project and exceptional service as a school governor among others.

 The Varsity awards are a mechanism that recognizes those in the influential positions in the country who have attributed to the university sector.

Among the key sponsors include Centenary bank, KCCA, SMSone media, MTN, Capital FM, Brussels Airlines Cocacola, NSSF,UAP Insurance, Rwenzori among others.
