In an interview with the News Day Zimbabwe, a local news paper in Zimbabwe, Mugabe’s spokesperson confirmed that the AU chair has not gone to Addis-Ababa, the seat of UA headquarters for the meeting.

“The chairman does not run the AU centre. Obama has come to Ethiopia for an official visit and to address the staff there. There are many dignitaries who come to the AU headquarters and you can imagine if all come wanting the President’s input,” George Charamba, Mugabe’s spokesperson said.

Mugabe’s spokesperson further said Zimbabwe is not afraid of Obama; “It’s the Head of State of another country. If you are afraid of him, we are not because he is just a Head of State who visits Africa and the AU headquarters by virtue of his ancestry. Madam (Nkosazana) Dhlamini-Zuma (AU Commission chairperson) is big enough to receive him.”

Obama will be addressing the 54 member continental block on matter affecting Africa.

USA- Zimbabwe strained Relationship

USA and European Union slapped a number sanctions on Zimbabwe a decade ago among which forbid the country’s ruling party top brass including President Mugabe from travelling to USA.

However, last year, European Union lifted a visa ban and assets freeze against members of Zimbabwe’s ruling elite, with the exception of Mugabe and his wife, Grace.

Last month, Mugabe, a staunch critic of homosexuality joked that he would travel to USA and proposing to marry Barrack Obama after USA court legalized same sex marriage. “I have just concluded – since President Obama endorses the same-sex marriage, advocates homosexual people and enjoys an attractive countenance – thus if it becomes necessary, I shall travel to Washington, DC, get down on my knee and ask his hand.”
