Police Investigations Boss Fired Over Gold Scandal

The Kampala Metropolitan North Regional Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) Commander Wilber Wanyama has been suspended for allegedly counterfeiting gold exhibits.

Wilber’s suspension by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP) Okoth Ochola comes two weeks after the former was implicated in tampering with exhibits worth Shs120m (USD 40,000) in a gold-related case. He has been referred to the police Professional Standards Unit (PSU) for investigations.

Police spokesperson, AIGP Felix Kaweesi revealed last week that Wanyama was arrested and detained at SIU, Kireka over gold swindling.

“Preliminary information we have is that we have in detention our own Kampala North Regional CID Wilber Wanyama who was allegedly involved in gold scandal recently,” Kaweesi said.

Police sources reveal that during an operation against fake gold dealers in Kawempe recently, Police recovered over Shs 33.6m ($10,000). The sources further state that Wanyama who is faulted for failing to transfer the suspect to Jinja Road Police Station, which is in charge of the area where the crime was committed, also reportedly kept the exhibit money for two days before he transferred to Kampala Central Police Station (CPS).
