Street Vendors Must Go – M7
By Serestino Tusingwire
President Yoweri Museveni has vowed to forcefully evict street vendors if they fail to adhere to orders of Kampala Minister Betty Kamya who recently orderd that they must leave the streets.
According to Museveni, it is suicidal to leave the vendors on the streets of Kampala city.
Recently, Minister Kamya ordered the eviction of street vendors in an attempt to enforce the trade order, but faced immediate resistance from the Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who backed them to remain, thus drawing angry protests from the vendors.
However, while addressing the media at Kawumu State Lodge in Luweero district recently, Museveni explained that the presence of street vendors has impacted negatively on revenue collection from shop owners and traffic flow in the city.
Museveni revealed that he had directed KCCA and Division authorities to provide alternative places to accommodate the evicted vendors.
Recently, the KCCA Council chaired by Lukwago passed a resolution allowing the street vendors to operate on Nakivubo Road, Allen Road, Nakivubo Mews, Mackay Road and Kafumbe Mukasa Road from 5pm to 10pm daily.
There are over 1,900 street vendors in Kampala, according to KCCA.
