Flying squad unit from Kampala central police station are holding five UPDF officers that are part of the notorious deadly gang suspected to have carried out a wave of armed robberies and murders in the city.
The group was arrested under the instructions of the police boss Gen Kale Kayihura following a wave of armed robberies along Lake Victoria Serena hotel, Kigo, Wakiso district and a spate of armed robberies in Kampala city.
Recently the inspector general of police Gen Kale Kayihura while reading the annual police crime report told the media that he had taken over the security of the area after gunmen carried out a string of armed robberies on diplomats and also directed the flying squad to apprehend the suspects.
Earlier before he made the remarks, six gunmen clad in police outfit had carried out an attack on Monday at a foreigner’s residence along Naguru drive and police managed to arrest one of the attackers who according to a source was later found out to a UPDF officer.
On July 23, 2015 these goons attacked a white man’s residence in Naguru where they put his wife on gunpoint but she was saved by the house main that sneaked outside and made an alarm which attracted the motor cycle riders who rushed to the scene and apprehended one while others fled the scene after they jumped over the fence.
“We arrested one who is a security officer only that we covered him with a hood such that he could not be identified because it was bad,” a source said on condition of anonymity.
Following the attack, flying squad carried out an operation where four others were arrested from different locations.
Those officers arrested whose names have been kept a top secret were found in possession of four guns, eight magazines , rounds of ammunition and police uniforms including rain coats.
A source also said they have been putting on police uniforms at night and carrying out illegal road blocks and foot patrols while stealing people and have been hiring out guns to criminals.
“They have been operating in areas of Kigo where Serena hotel is, around Akright zones and many diplomats have fallen victims,” source added.
Patrick Onyango the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson when contacted for a comment declined to comment on the issue while police spokesperson Fred Enanga was unreachable.
