He appealed to them to be creative and innovative in order to help the societies from where they come from.

“You have shown toughness, resilience and perseverance required to complete a great course. Now go out and prove to the whole world that your degree is not just a piece of paper but the evidence of a creative, enduring spirit, an intellect dedicated to excellence and courage in service to your family and all mankind,” Suruma advised.

Suruma also called upon government and all development partners to improve funding in terms of research for Makerere University, before he called upon the university staff to lead the country in advancing knowledge and finding peaceful solutions to Uganda’s problems.

In his remarks vice chancellor Prof John Dumba Ssentamu, revealed that the university has been selected through a competitive process to host two African centres of excellence funded by the World Bank.

He said, these will help to establish and strengthen specialization and collaboration among a network of higher education institutions in Eastern and southern Africa.
