At least 16 people have been critically injured when a bus they were travelling in overturned in Nakasongola district on the Kampala-Gulu Highway this morning.
The bus registration number USA 566U, belonging to California Bus Services Limited, was travelling from Arua heading to Kampala at around 5am when it overturned at Kapaburuli village, some seven kilometres from Nakasongola town council.
Police spokesperson for Savannah Region Lameck Kigozi explains that the bus overturned after it veered off the road and fell in the trench.
He says that after the incident, Traffic police officers in Nakasongola and Luweero rushed to the scene and transferred the victims to Nakasongola Health Centre for treatment. He adds that five of victims are being evacuated to Mulago Hospital after they sustained severe wounds.
A survivor of the accident, Mustapha Hamis, explained that since it was dark most of the passengers were asleep and only woke up when the bus was overturning. Mustapha adds that in the stampede, many passengers sustained broken limbs.
At time of filling the report, police was removing the wreckage and the identities of the victims were not easily available.
Recently seven people died and 20 others were critically injured in an accident involving two busses at Wabigalo, near Nakasongola town. Another accident at Nisitu, near Juba, claimed the lives of at least 35 people after a Bakulu Bus Company collided head-on with a trailer.
