Uganda National Cultural Centre (National Theatre) boss Joseph Walugembe was last Friday night arrested by plain clothed police officers over abuse of office.
Walugembe is alleged to have diverted monies accrued from the theater to his personal use.
The Theatre which is a national culture centre meant to help performing artistes has lately been turned into a commercial centre.
“He rented out the centre rooms to advocates, land dealers which is against the plan and vision of having the National Theatre as a cultural centre,” an official from the Ministry of Gender which supervises the centre said on condition of anonymity.
Sources close to the investigations told Red Pepper that one of the only two studios that the theatre has, was turned into a restaurant and it is run by Walugembe’s wife called Agnes Nakakawa.
“Even the money that is collected from the parking lot doesn’t go the centre’s account but put to personal use,” a source informed us.
Walugembe’s arrest comes days after artistes complained to the Gender ministry that Walugembe had chased them out of the theatre.
He is to be aligned in the Anti corruption court over charges of embezzlement and abuse of office.
