The Minister of Health, Christine Ondoa has confirmed news that the deadly Marburg virus has spread to Kampala city center as a couple who tested positive was admitted at Mulago isolation facility on Monday.

The Minister revealed the shocking revelation, today (Monday) while giving an update at the Media Center in Kampala. She declined revealing names of the sick citing torment and psychological torture among the patients. Ondoa told Red Pepper that so far eight people have succumbed to the fatal disease, 45 samples have been taken from the contacts where nine tested positive including five at Rushoroza hospital in Kabale, two are admitted at Mayanja Memorial Hospital in Mbarara and two are in Mulago isolation facility.

The minister added that number of contacts under surveillance has increased to 436 across the country including seven junior nurses at Ibanda hospital. When Red Pepper asked whether the positive couple at Mulago are residents here, Ondoa said that they were coming from the Western region and health officials had learnt of the incident when a family member blew the whistle to the Ministry thus all the relatives are being monitored.

Dr. Ruth Acheng who accompanied the Minister said they had come by private means with relatives who are being monitored. “We have cautioned the KCCA officials to be strict with public buses so that people are safe,” Aceng said.
