The arrival of South African based goalkeeper Denis Onyango has boosted the Uganda Cranes camp at Namboole Stadium ahead of the teams’ 2014 World Cup qualifier against Liberia this weekend.

Onyango who features for Mamelodi Sundowns in the PSL League has been injured back in South Africa, but was part of the team that trained this morning at Namboole Stadium. The goalkeeper who has played a big role for the national for the last six years told Uganda Radio Network that he feels better and is ready to work hard for the national team.

TP Mazembe’s Mike Mutyaba, Moses Oloya and Asante Kotoko’s Joseph Ochaya who were not part of the team yesterday appeared for training.

Team skipper Andy Mwesigwa said they will have to work hard to beat Liberia because they need a win to brighten their chances of making it to the next stage of the qualifiers.

Mwesigwa who extended his contract with FC Ordabasy in Kazakhstan early this year said if they work as a team, they will win the match easily. The defender who took over as captain from Austria based Ibra Sekagya after faling to qualify for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations said if they managed to get a point away to Angola, there is nothing impossible for them to get all three points if they show determination and hunger to win.

Liberia play host to Uganda on March 24 at the Samuel Kanyan Doe Sports complex. Uganda is currently second in the group behind Senegal after their two draws against Angola and Senegal. Head Coach Bobby Williamson had 16 players report for training today at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

Williamson said he had been impressed by the attitude of the players who turned up for training. He said he expected the bulk of the team to be in camp by Wednesday.

Uganda last made an appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1978.
