Two Rwanda top players Jean Claude Gasigwa and Ernest Habiyambere have qualified for the semi finals at the on-going 2013 Castle Lite Uganda Open Tennis Championships at the Kampala Club.
Gasigwa on Thursday morning beat countryman Mubarak Harerimana 6-0, 6-1 in a quarter final tie, while Habiyambere sent Uganda’s Henry Muyanja packing 6-3, 6-4. Gasigwa said he was now looking forward to facing Uganda’s Duncan Mugabe tomorrow.
Mugabe, who won a bronze medal for Uganda at the 2011 All Africa Games in Mozambique, saw off Moses Otiti 6-2, 6-2, while the defending champion and top seed David Oringa ejected Olivier Nkunda 6-1, 6-2.
Mugabe later paired with his brother Daniel Ruyange to beat Andrew Oryada and Charles Wanyama 6-3, 6-0 in the first round of the men’s doubles, while Charles Ssenyange and Patrick Komakech lost to Oringa and Herbert Buyinza 1-6, 2-6.
Zimbabwe’s Fadzai Nawisire also made it to the quarter finals after beating Joie Keter 6-2, 6-0, while Rwanda’s Megdne Ngabire beat Viola Akuma 6-1, 6-0.
The event supported by main sponsors Nile Breweries Limited (UBL) through their Castle Lite brand and Housing Finance Bank will climax on Saturday with the finals for the seniors and the veterans. Cash prize will be up for grabs for the best players.
