Health workers in Rakai have abandoned newly constructed staff quarters citing shoddy work.
The abandoned building was constructed at Kirumba Health Centre Three located in Kirumba Sub County in Rakai district. Rakai district financed the construction of the quarters to address the accommodation crisis at the health centre.
Last year, four families of the health workers moved into the newly constructed building, but have since abandoned it and relocated their families.
Joan Namayanja, the In-charge of Kirumba Health Centre, says the building started leaking just a month after completion. He tells Uganda Radio Network that all the four health workers and their families have relocated fearing that the building could collapse and kill them.
Namayanja says they have reported the shoddy construction work to Rakai health authorities.
The abandoned facility and found it deserted. Clearly, the doors fixed had also started developing cracks.
Some of the affected health workers are now renting rooms in Kalisizo town council and Kachanga trading centre.
Henry Kasumba, the Kirumba Sub County Chief, says the cost of construction is not known. He says the contract was given to unknown local people who undertook the construction. Kasumba says they want the construction repeated immediately because they fear the health workers who are the main beneficiaries would abscond from duty.
Julius Ssenyondo, a resident of Kirumba says they want those involved in the construction investigated for corruption. He also says they want Rakai district to explain how the unknown people won the tender to carry out the construction of the staff quarters which threaten the lives of people.
Dr Robert Mayanja, the Rakai District Medical Officer who is supposed to supervise these projects, declined to comment on the matter when the media contacted him on Friday.
