Uganda’s Tennis star, Duncan Mugabe faces a tough test in the 2013 Castle Lite Uganda Open Tennis Championship which started with the main draw yesterday at the Kampala Club.

The 2011 Uganda Open Champion who returned from the US few weeks ago will have to battle against the 2010 champions Jean Claude Gasigwa if they both make it to the semi finals.

Mugabe who is ranked number three in the event told Uganda Radio Network that the draw was tough but he would do all it takes to win.

While the defending champion David Oringa has a relatively fair draw, he will also have to overcome two Rwanda players to make it to the finals.

In some of the games played on Monday before the rains washed off the matches, Rwanda’s duo of Justisi Ntamereya and Olivier Nkunda were in excellent form as they made it to the second round.

Ntamereya made short work of Uganda’s Dennis Ofuyuru whom he brushed aside 6-0, 6-2, while Nkunda who finished in the quarter finals last year also dismissed upcoming Ugandan youthful player Edwin Mukisa 6-0, 6-1. Nkunda, who finished his game in 43 minutes, was quite happy with his start and hopes to make it further in the tournament.

Defending champion Oringa also started well when he sent Rwanda’s Innocent Rukundo out with a some clever play that earned him a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Uganda’s Henry Muyanya had to struggle to eliminate Kenya’s 17-year old Ibrahim Yeyko Kibet 6-4, 6-4 in another game. He did admit some discomfort.

The event supported by main sponsors Nile Breweries Limited (UBL) through their Castle Lite brand and Housing Finance Bank will climax on March 23 with the finals. All finalists in all categories including veterans will win cash prizes.
