The Archbishop of Mbarara diocese, Paul K. Bakyenga, has doubled his preparations for the Uganda Martyrs Marathon set for May 12, that will precede the June 3 annual celebrations at Namugongo. According to one of the event organisers, Mercy Timbitwire, the cleric whose diocese was selected to lead in this year’s celebrations will be the chief marathoner and that he confirmed he is more ready to give participants a run for their money. The head of the Publicity and Information Committee, Arinaitwe Rugyendo told Pepper Sport yesterday that the marathon is part of the activities the diocese is currently engaged in to arouse interest in the event as well as mobilise resources for a splendid organisation. Rugyendo adds that participation in the 10km marathon will cost Shs20,000 for adults and Shs10,000 for students with free running kits and refreshments.
The marathon will start from St. Jude Catholic Church in Naguru at 6:00am and end at the same venue where the bishop will preside over mass afterwards. Several corporate companies have been seen scrambling for the cards after getting assurance that Kampala Metropolitan Police commander, Felix Kaweesi and Traffic boss Lawrence Nuwabine will be in charge of security and traffic respectively. Red pepper joined hands with the diocese to push forward the noble cause that is partly aimed at raising funds for making the June 3 celebrations expected to be attended to by over three million pilgrims – one of a kind. The marathon according to experts will be a precursor for the famed November Kampala Marathon which makes it a must attend for corporate athletes if they are to keep in shape. It will also be an opportunity for the strong believers to rub shoulders with scores of men of God who have shown interest in the race. For corporate bookings, marathon lovers in Kampala are advised to call Mercy Timbitwire (0782952095), Stephen Kibuuka (0702451909) and Silver Aguba (0701412618).
