Kampala Capital City Authority has renewed calls to relocate Arua Park, Nebbi Park and Qualicell bus terminal from the city centre to ease traffic congestion. Eng. Andrew Kitaka, the KCCA Director engineering and Technical services told a midterm joint sector review meeting recently that they are considering relocating the three bus parks from the Central Business District – CBD.

The proposal is part of the traffic management measures drafted by KCCA to ease traffic jam. Kitaka says KCCA has identified land in Banda along the Kampala – Jinja high to host buses plying the Eastern route, Bwaise for the Northern route and Nateete for the Western route.

He says that KCCA is sourcing for funds to buy land to relocate the bus parks. KCCA has already ordered bus companies to get booking offices and move away from city pavements and only bring a bus to load when they are ready to drive off. Speaking to our reporter, Jeffers Anguyo the Director Gaagaa bus company said despite the fact that move will not affect their operations; they are only worried about their clients.

He explains that their clientele is majorly made up of businessmen and women, who travel with large sums of money adding that dropping them off in places such as Kawempe, could expose them to danger. Andrew Rabo, a businessman who deals in motor vehicle spare parts and frequently travels by bus says there is no need to relocate the buses from the Central Business District. He instead asks the authorities to consider relocating the taxis which he says are the major cause of traffic jam. Jeffers Leti, another businessman from Arua want KCCA to find alternative land to relocate the buses to the northern route saying they risk losing money to thieves and incurring extra expenses to reach Bwaise.

Siraje Sembatya, the chairman Qualicell bus terminal says that they are not yet aware of the proposal by KCCA to relocate the buses because they have not yet been notified. It is not yet clear, when KCCA intends to implement the proposal. During the reign of Nasser Ntege Ssebagala, the former KCC Mayor he proposed to relocate the bus park, but the decision was not implemented.
