Fresh fighting on Monday broke out between M23 rebels and government forces. The fighting broke out at Muningi about 10 KMs from Goma city in North Kivu in the wee hours of Monday morning after government forces raided a rebel base. The attack on the 23 rebel base comes few days after the arrival of the UN intervention brigade in Goma.
A soldier attached to the M23 presidential guard brigade told the media from Bunagana that the government forces attacked their base at about 4am. He claimed that they had not yet registered any causality adding that, government had lost several soldiers. However, URN couldn’t independently verify the claims.
Colonel Vianney Kazarama, the M23 spokesperson says that they have managed to repulse the attack and push back government to Muja town, where fighting is ongoing. He says that despite the fact that they are committed to having a peaceful solution to the conflict, they are ready to protect themselves from any attack. Kazarama says that they have also got evidence showing that Congolese government forces fought alongside the FDLR.
According to a source, the DRC government forces wanted to recapture Tongo in Rutshuru, which is under the control of the rebel forces. As a result of the fresh clashes, people displaced by the fighting have started assembling near the Uganda-Congo border.
