Parliamentarians Call For Strengthening Role Of PAC

Parliamentarians have called for a strengthened role of Public Accounts Committees (PAC) in order for the lawmakers to remain relevant in executing their oversight roles.

At the opening of the three-day joint accountability conference, members of Public Accounts committees from Eastern and Southern Africa said increased role of PAC will go a long way in ensuring good governance in the member states.

Mr Albert Kah-Dapaah, the executive secretary West Africa Association of Public Accounts Committees said “As far as good governance is concerned, our biggest challenge is in the area of financial accountability.”

PAC remains the key accountability committee but, as Mr Kah-Dapaah says, accountability mechanisms in most African governments are not respected apart from the Office of the Auditor General.
