Drugs worth millions have been burnt to ashes following a fire out break at Kimuka Health Centre III, Kinuka Sub County in Lyantonde District.
The fire is said to have started at around 5am Friday morning at the store section of the health facility and lasted for more than two hours.
Elizabeth Nabagala, the Officer in Charge Kimuka Health Centre III, says she was doing her rounds at the time the fire started. She was attracted to find out what was happening by the alarms of people battling to control the blaze.
Nabagala says that drugs lost in the inferno are expected to be worth over 15 million shillings. She says that the cause of the fire is still mystery because at the time of the incident the facility was experiencing power outage.
Lyantonde District Criminal Investigations officer Ruth Ninsiima says police was able to help put out the fire with the assistance of the residents.
She adds that police has so far arrested 2 security guards at the heath centre to help them with investigations into the matter.
Ninsiima identified the suspects as Legius Mugumya and John Kashangwire.
Kinuka Sub County Chairperson, Mugabi Lwamulinda, has asked government to come to the rescue of people in the area because it the major facility in Kinuka Sub County and the neighbourhood.
Kimuka Health Centre III receives more than 150 out patients on a daily basis.
This is the second case of fire outbreak in health centres in Southern Region, the first case being at Kakuto Health Centre IV where fire damaged OPD and pharmacy last year.
