Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) has selected 32 players from Teso and Karamoja sub regions to represent North East Region at the Airtel Inter Region competition.
Airtel Rising stars Under 17 tournament 2013 was held in Soroti Municipality from Saturday to Sunday.
Twenty- four teams from both Teso and Karamoja region had registered to participate in the tournament sponsored by Telecom Company Airtel and supported by FUFA.
Syllas Oluka, the Coordinator Airtel North East region and also FUFA delegate for Amuria district, told Redpepper Online that the event attracted a total of 16 boys’ teams and 8 girls’ teams.
The teams were drawn from the districts of Kaberamaido, Soroti, Kumi, Ngora, Bukedea, Amuria, Katakwi, Serere, Napak and Moroto. The tournament was played on knock out basis.
Bukedea Central FC on Sunday won a trophy and received a cheque of one million shillings after beating Yanga FC from Soroti 2:1 in the finals. In the girl’s tournament, Divine Stars Soroti took a trophy and received a cheque worth 500,000 shillings after beating AS Roma 1-0.
Oluka says Airtel rising stars inter-regional competition will be held at Masaka Recreation ground in August 2013.
This is the third edition of Airtel Rising Stars Under 17 tournament.
Oluka noted that all the two sub regions of Teso and Karamoja participated in the tournament compared to last year where only teams from Teso region took part.
Ibrahim Maraka, FUFA National delegate, for North East, told our reporter that the 32 players are to start training immediately.
