Heavily-armed anti-riot police have been deployed in Mityana town as news filters through that Democratic Party President Norbert Mao intends to hold a massive rally in the area this afternoon.
Commanded by the Officer in Charge of operations Rwatooro Joseph, the police have cordoned off Busimbi gombolola grounds, where the rally is supposed to be held.
DP party leaders in Mityana district led by Badru Mutesasira, the chairperson, and his vice Lukonge Mukambwe claim the rally is to address a number of issues. They claim Mao wants to speak to party faithful about the 2013-2014 budget, the economic situation in the country and the state of Mityana district.
But Rwatooro insists police will not allow the rally to proceed because the organisers did not seek clearance.
But the party leaders and supporters insist that they had sought permission from the Inspector General of Police General Kale Kayihura. They say they will present the written documentation of consent at the time of the rally.
Mukambwe says police should come to the rally only to provide protection.
