Richard Mugisha, the 21-year-old driver of the ill fated fuel tanker that burst into flames and claimed the lives of 51 people along the northern by pass in Kampala last month has appeared in court.
Mugisha appeared before Boniface Wamala, the Nabweru Chief magistrate on Tuesday afternoon.
He was charged with 51 counts of causing bodily injuries or death through dangerous driving and failure to report an accident. Details of the case are that on June 29th, at about 9:30pm along Northern bypass while driving a fuel tanker number UAS 374C, Mugisha was involved in an accident with another vehicle but failed to notify police.
51 people were killed and several others burnt severely after the fuel tanker burst into flames as a result of the fuel spillage. Mugisha pleaded not guilty to all the 51 counts of causing bodily injuries or death through dangerous driving. He however, pleaded to the count of failure to report the accident to police.
In his ruling, Wamala asked him to pay a fine of 400,000 shillings for failure to report the accident or face imprisonment for six months. Mugisha failed to pay the money and was sent to Luzira prison until Wednesday (today) when he will pay the fine and apply for bail on the remaining charges.
