Human Rights Watch has implicated the M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo of summarily executing 44 people since March this year. This is contained in a report issued by Human Rights on Tuesday.
According to the report, the rebels executed 15 civilians from the Hutu ethnic group in several villages of Busanza in Rutshuru territory in April and at least six others in mid-June.
Human Rights Watch also accuses the rebels of raping 61 women and an unspecified number of girls in Eastern DRC. It cites an incident on July 05th, where a 12-year-old girl was raped by rebel fighters in Rutshuru territory when she was out to fetch water. The rebels also allegedly executed an 18 year- old woman after denied them sex. It also faults the rebel force of forcefully conscripting young men and boys into its ranks from DRC and Rwanda, where it allegedly continues enjoying support.
The rebels have dismissed the report as baseless and unfounded nonsense. Amani Kabashe, the Civilian Spokesperson of the rebels told local media on Tuesday afternoon that the Human Rights Watch reports are prepared by Kabila and his men. He says there no doubt that all the reports circulated by Human Rights Watch are aimed tarnishing their image.
