Gen. Aronda Briefly Appeared before the Appointments committee

The appointments committee of parliament is scheduled to meet President Yoweri Museveni over the appointment General Aronda Nyakairima as Internal Affairs Minister. General Nyakairima was appointed in a recent cabinet reshuffle.  However, parliament, which is charged with vetting the nominees, deferred  his appointment pending  consultations with Museveni.

It came after some MPs questioned whether it was okay to approve the appointment of Gen Aronda Nyakairima, who was still a serving army officer. Nyakairima was appointed minister shortly after he was replaced by Gen Aronda Nyakairima as Chief of Defense Forces. Helen Nanteza Kawesa, the Public Relations Officer of parliament says the committee met Museveni briefly last Friday but they were unable to conclude the discussions on the appointment of General Nyakairima.

She says that the committee is scheduled to meet Museveni sometime this week to resolve the issues surrounding Nyakairima’s appointment.

The UPDF act  requires that for one to join a political office he must resign from active military service before taking up office, however the Attorney General recently opined that parliament Erred in forcing the resignation of Gen Jeje odongo, and in the case of Gen Nyakairima. the Attorney General Peter Nyombi says he can be seconded by the commander in chief to serve in a political office.

  3. Which law is Peter Nyombi quoting. Both the constitution and the UPDF Act dont permit it, so which law states that the CIC can second a serving Officer to a political office.
