Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic believes the country has abundant young talent but lacks good structures to tap it Emmanuel Ndugga in Hoima reports.

Micho, who traveled to Hoima – a two hour drive from the Ugandan capital – two days after Cranes dispatched Tanzania in the race to 2014 Africa Nations Championship (Chan), watched star-studded Kampala play to a 1-all draw with Mid North at Booma grounds in Hoima in day one of the MTN-FUFA inter region tournament.

“Uganda has many talented players and am going to use this tournament and scout for the U17 and 20 national teams,” the Serb told our reporter in Hoima.

“These players have never gotten a chance to play in the top tier league,” Micho added.

“The available structures need to get better in order to accommodate all these budding stars for the bigger stage to come.

“They (youngsters) have the opportunities to join the U-17, U-20 and eventually senior side but they need to prove themselves first.”

North East started on losing note after going down 1-0 to coach Edward Golola’s Buganda. Buganda, who won the inaugural Cup in 2009, scored a penalty late in the second half through Emma Kato Ssali after a defender handled the ball in the box.

The tournament, sponsored by MTN Uganda Limited, is used by the FA’s technical win to tap talent from around the different regions.

Players who feature for teams in the top Tier Premier League and the second level Big League are not allowed to showcase their talent in this event.

The excited locals nicknamed the Uganda coach ‘Abwooli’ and the outgoing FUFA President Lawrence Mulindwa was also baptized ‘Amooti’.

Hoima district is found in Bunyoro Kingdom of Western Uganda and its people have a rich cultural heritage that includes special pet names ‘empaako’ used to show love and respect.

Micho is also known as ‘Serunjogi’ in central Uganda where he had a coaching stint with the country’s most decorated club SC Villa in the early 2000s.
