Nsumba in Cranes’ final CHAN squad

Uganda Cranes tactician Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has named URA FC skipper Augustine Nsumba in the final squad that will face Tanzania on Saturday in the second leg qualifier of the 2014 Africa Nations Championship.

The former SC Villa and ex-professional in Iceland was only recalled to the national team last week after over three years.

“He has been working so hard and hopefully he gets chance to be on the starting team,” said Micho.

Nsumba, who hopes to return to the paid ranks in Europe, skippered URA FC to the quarterfinals of the 2013 Cecafa Kagame Club Championships in Darfur, Sudan, last month.

The technical bench also included UK-bound youngster Nelson Ssenkatuuka on the team. Ssenkatuuka was on target for the U-20 national side when they lost 3-2 to the Cranes on Wednesday in a warm-up match.

In the game against the U-20s, midfielder Brian Majwega, Frank Kalanda and Simon Okwi scored for the Cranes. Ssenkatuuka, who is headed to join a football Academy in the UK, and Abraham Ndugwa netted for the youngsters.

Micho said on Thursday afternoon that the Saturday game is very big for the future of many local-based Ugandan players.

“We need to go and play that game like a cup final because qualification for the 2014 CHAN will open many doors for the talented players in Uganda,” said the coach.

Although Micho refused to reveal his starting team against Tanzania, he maintained that there will be slight changes.

Experienced players Hassan Mawanda Wasswa, who captained the team in the first leg, and goal-scorer in Dar es Salaam on July 13, Denis Iguma, are sure starters in the team together with goalkeeper Hamza Muwonge.
