Africa Nations Championship qualifier
Uganda 3 -1 Tanzania (4-1 agg)
Striker Frank Kalanda’s brace in either half on Saturday evening proved vital, helping the local Uganda Cranes to brush aside neighbours Tanzania and book a place at the South Africa 2013 CHAN tournament.
Cranes beat Taifa Stars 3-1 in Kampala today to book their ticket for the 2014 African Nations Championship showpiece in Southern part of the continent meant for only locally based players.
The Cranes, who appeared at the 2011 CHAN competition in Sudan, qualify 4-1 goal aggregate after their 1-0 away win in Dar es salaam on July 13. Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic’s side gave the Taifa Stars no chance in the second leg played at the Mandella National Stadium, Namboole.
Kalanda and Mpande could have put Uganda in the lead before the 7th minute mark but the two anchormen who seemed tensed in front of goal, failed to find the net in about four attempts.
Uganda dominated the midfield in the early stages of the first half where captain Hassan Wasswa and pacy winger Brian Majwega operated but the home team failed to penetrate the iron clad defence of the visitors who looked disciplined.
The first half ended 1-1 with Frank Kalanda giving the hosts the lead in the 6th minute. Amri Kiemba equalized 10 minutes later from a well taken pass by winger Mrisho Ngassa.
But the second half belonged to the Cranes who run rings around the visitors.
Brian Majwega made it 2-1 for the Cranes after 48 minutes from the spot after defender David Luhende handles in the box.
On 62 minutes Kalanda completed his brace to ensure the Cranes booked their second successive CHAN appearance.
There were spontaneous jubilations at the Mandela National Stadium, Namboole just outside Kampala when the Madagascan match official blew the whistle to bring the contest to an end after 90 minutes of action.
Uganda could have won the contest by a wider margin but their front men fluffed numerous begging chances on the day to the chagrin of the fairly big crowd that watched the game.
The victory gave Uganda their 24th win over their neighbors in all their 42 all-time matches.
