KITGUM: Police Officer Commits Suicide

A police officer in Kitgum district has committed suicide by shooting himself, hardly a week after a similar incident in Lwengo district.

David Obbo, a police constable attached to Kitgum Central Police Station, is reported to have shot himself dead on Sunday night from where he was deployed for guard duty.

Patrick Okema, the Aswa Regional Police Spokesperson, explains that the late Obbo was deployed along with a colleague identified as Corporal Okello Kaunda to guard the compound of Irene Gleeson International Foundation in Kitgum town.

Okema says the other guard told investigators that he responded to a gunshot only to find his colleague lying unconscious. He says investigators found a single cartridge on the scene and a magazine loaded with 29 rounds of live ammunitions which made them to suspect the officer could have committed suicide.

The gun has been forwarded to ballistic experts in Kampala for examination.

The death of the officer comes hardly a week after another officer committed suicide by shooting himself. Jude Ssenkungu, a police officer attached to Lwengo Police post last Thursday shot himself from Mbirizi Police Staff Quarters. The death of Ssenkungu, who left behind four wives and 12 children, was blamed on his failure to make ends meet for his family.
