A speeding single cabin pick-up knocked dead a police officer in Moroto district. The incident occurred at Naleyo grazing area, Nadunget Sub County, about four kilometres from Moroto town along Moroto-Soroti road.
Police Constable Simon Oriokot (27) attached to Moroto Central Police Station was knocked dead on Sunday night at 8.00pm. He was riding a motorbike registration number UP 1254 on a corrugated road. The driver of the car registration number UAL 615U charged with escorting the UN staff in Karamoja Emmanuel Kapel, is detained at Moroto Police Station to help with investigations.
Irene Aceng, the Karamoja Police spokesperson, says the cop was on his way to Rupa village where he is resident at the police post. She blames the accident on both parties saying they did not observe the road rules; otherwise the head on collusion was avoidable. She explains that the driver of the van was driving recklessly while the police officer was riding a bike without lights.
One of the officers at Moroto barracks who preferred anonymity says the deceased was under the influence of alcohol. He adds that the time the police arrived to pick his body from the accident scene it reeked of alcohol indicating that he had drunk heavily before his death. The body is lying at Moroto Referral Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
