Cranes coach Micho Sredojevic has questioned the fitness levels of the experienced South African referee Daniel Bennett. This follows his 10-man side’s loss to a hungry Senegal side in a 2014 World Cup qualifier in Marrakech, Morocco.
Micho said in modern refereeing the match officials must be very aggressive and run to reach almost all areas, but Bennett concentrated in the centre of the pitch.
“I respect Bennett a lot because of his experience, but he was not well prepared for the game as his fitness levels where wanting as he handled the game from the centre of the pitch,” Micho said.
“He did not handle the game poorly, but his failure to reach certain areas on the pitch did not give him chance to make some decisions.”
And on Godfrey Walusimbi’s 36th minute red card, Micho said it was a very harsh decision because the two players had gone in hard for the ball.
“It was a case where Bennett should have simply cautioned Walusimbi instead of sending him off,” reasoned Micho.
