Egypt vs Uganda Cairo Monday 30
Iraq vs Uganda Amman, Jordan Wednesday 2
Uganda Cranes coach Mulitin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic will use the upcoming international friendlies against Egypt and Iraq to scout the shape and terrain for the 2014 Africa Nations Championship and 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
Coach Micho’s men who left Kampala for Cairo aboard EgyptAir on Sunday will take on the Pharaohs on Monday night at Airforce Stadium in Cairo before connecting to Amman, Jordan, where they will face off with Iraq two days later.
“We go there with a two-pronged approach: play as friendly internationals as possible to expose ours boys and also to start preparations for CHAN in South Africa and the qualifiers of AFCON 2015,” the Serb told RED Pepper at Entebbe before flying to Cairo.
“We would also take this opportunity to include some of the players who will feature in the Chan tournament to strike a balance.” He added.
Mengo insiders say the Ugandan FA was contacted by the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) on Saturday for a friendly game after Sierra Leone backed out of an earlier scheduled warm up with the Pharaohs who are preparing to face Ghana’s Black Stars in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers play offs on October 15.
The countries last clashed in an international friendly in August which the hosts won 3-0 in El Gouna.
Defender Denis Guma was the notable absentee on the 18-man team after he picked up an ankle injury while on club (SCVU) duty while KCC midfielder Hassan Wasswa was reported dropped due to disciplinary issues with SC Victoria University goalkeeper Benjamin Ochan and clubmate Manko Kaweesa returned into the national fold after a long absence.
Egyptian Coach Bob Bradley said that Egypt chose Uganda for the warm as they have an almost similar playing style to Ghana.
With the game being staged in the 30,000-capacity military stadium, it will be the first time Egypt have played in the capital since October 2011, following the Port Said tragedy and civil unrest in the country.
The Pharaohs’ recent home matches have been in the Red Sea resort of El Gouna.
