A two and half-year-old boy who went missing from his parent’s home on Saturday evening has been found dead in an open pit latrine at Nakapelimen village in Moroto Municipality. The deceased has been identified as Benjamin Oyugi.
Mary Akol, the mother to the deceased says she left her son at home playing with the neighbors children to attend the national peace day celebrations at Boma ground in Moroto Municipality.
Akol says on returning home in the evening she realized Oyugi was missing and immediately mounted a search for the boy. She says they searched up to the bus park and made radio announcements with no trace of the boy till they retired to bed.
Akol says that they even went to the pit but there was no sign of the boy. She however, says that when she went to the pit on Sunday morning she found the boy’s body floating on water.
Moses Lorika says Oyugi could have been strangled and thrown into the pit. He wonders how the kid fell into the pit yet he was playing with the colleagues in the court yard.
John Omwony, the officer in charge of the crime desk at Moroto Central Police station says investigations have been launched into the matter. He calls for calm among the relatives and parents of the boy. He appeals to homes with open pits to have them covered so as to avoid accidents.
