Senegal Ends Uganda’s World Cup Dream

First leg: Uganda 1 Senegal 1 (Senegal advance to the final qualifying round)

Uganda missed out on a place in the final round of qualifying for the 2014 FIFA World Cup after being beaten to a 1-0 by Senegal on the neutral ground of Marrakech in Morocco, Saturday.

Godfrey Walusimbi got marching orders from referee Daniel Bennet after lifting his studs when he went for a challenge with Senegal’s Gassama Lamine in the 36th minute.

The decider saw defender Godfrey Walusimbi sent off for a bad foul on Gassama Lamine in the 36th minute.

Uganda, who had been second the pool for larger spells of round of matches, needed a win to make sure of their passage, while the draw would have been enough if Senegal led proceedings.

While Senegal drew 1-1 last month in their only friendly against Zambia, Uganda played two matches, losing 3-0 away to six-time African champions Egypt and beating Botswana 3-1 last weekend.

Sadio Mane gave them the lead on 84 minutes, the only goal of the game.

But with a man short and time running against them, Coach Micho Sredojevic’s men could not recover.

And the result sees Senegal finish top of Group J table with 12 points, while the Cecafa regional champions end their 2014 qualifying hopes in second place with 8 points.

Senegal now joins Ethiopia, Nigeria, Egypt and Ivory Coast among others in the final phase of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers.

Angola finish on high

Liberia registered a 4-1 in their dead runner victory over Liberia. The result ensured Palancas Negras finished the pool in third place, while Liberia pick up the wooden spoon.

Both teams had been out of contention for top spot ahead of the match, but Angola still put in a fine attacking display.

They were ahead inside two minutes through Guedes, and doubled that advantage just after halftime when Mabululo was on target.

They were rampant at that stage and netted third and fourth goals through Guilherme and Abdul.

Liberia did get a consolation as Marcus Macauley scored for them with 12 minutes remaining.
