Menengai Oil Nakuru RFC were Saturday named Champions of the first edition of the East Africa Superior Cup after defeating MTN Heathens on aggregate at Kyadondo Rugby grounds.
The Western Kenya based side scored 9 points from Martin Muita’s penalty kicks while Heathens fetched 15 points from Benon Kizza and Jonathan Onen trys and penalty as well as one conversion from chris Lubanga.
Nakuru beat Heathens 23-3 in the first edition but were edged 15-9 at Kyadondo to complete on top with a 32-18 aggregate. The Wanyore walked away with 8 million shillings and the first EA Cup title they promised to defend it come next season.
Coach Dominque Habimana told East Africa Super Cup snoops that “Heathens were quite prepared for the home tie and equally needed a home win to return into the competition but our target was now to defend our score as well as pick more points. All in all it was a very nice game great opposition and good hospitality” Habimana charged.
To preside over the event Uganda Rugby union chairman Andrew Owori in company of sponsors handed the trophy to Nakuru Rugby Club team.
The East Africa Superior Cup is played by the Kenya Rugby League winner and Uganda Rugby League winner every year but has plans of including other East Africa Rugby playing nations in other editions.
