Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro Stars came from behind to hold Zambia’s Chiolopolo in their CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup Group ‘B’ opener played at the Machakos Stadium.
Burundi now tops the group after their win over Somalia while Zambia and Kilimanjaro are tied at a point ahead of bottom placed Somalia.A strike in each half by Christopher Nduwarugira and Abdul Razak Fiston has seen the Burundian Swallows register an impressive 2- 0 victory over The Somalian Ocean Stars in a thrilling game played in rain marred Machakos Stadium group B fixture.
Felix Katongo netted Zambia’s lone goal in the 41st minute from close range handing the Senior Challenge Cup visiting team the lead into the half-time break.
Zambia were the largely the better side in the first half with several of their chances going to waste after building but Gor Mahia goalkeeper Ivo Mapunda was there to rescue Kilimanjaro Stars.
The second half kicked off on a bright note for the Kilimanjaro Stars side as they attacked viciously and managed to net an equalizer through Yanga striker Mrisho Ngassa in the 47th minute.
It was then a balanced match as either side attacked unsuccessfully amidst a muddy pitch after the heavy rains that pounded Machakos and its environs on Thursday afternoon.
The last time Kilimanjaro Stars played against Zambia in the Challenge Cup was during the 2010 edition at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam where they home side flopped to concede two easy goals.
However, the team progressed to the final after the first hurdle failure to win their third Challenge Cup title since 1974.Zambia face Burundi in their penultimate Group B match on December 1 before closing their preliminary round fixtures against Somalia four days later.
