Five people were last night rushed to hospital in critical condition after a trailer reg. No. RAB 271A/RL 0515 carrying tonnes of soap and cooking oil veered off the road and rammed into a building housing more than three shops in which they were sitting.
The incident occurred at around 9pm at Kanyogoga Village in Lwengo district along Masaka-Mbarara highway.
The victims have been identified as Hanizi Sesanga (19) a trailer turn-boy a resident of Namasuba-Kikajjo Zone in Kampala, Ramula Namalamba (40) building owner, Manisuli Sebudde (20), Hassan Kakooza (27) and Aisha Namatovu (35) who had gone to the shops to buy maize flour.
The incident comes just few days after another fatal accident occurred at Katovu town in the same district last week.
Namalamba, one of the survivors, says she had stocked her retail shop to make huge sales during the Christmas season but most of her items were looted after the accident.
She explains that she was in the shop with her two sons Manisuli Sebudde (20) and Hassan Kakooza who were badly injured in the accident.
Nanteza Edith, the District Traffic Officer confirmed the incident saying that the driver George Nsereko had fallen asleep at the time of the accident.
She says that Nsereko escaped immediately after the accident.
The victims were rushed to Dr. Lukwago’s clinic for treatment. Three of them are making a good recovery while the other two are still in need of medical attention.
