Dan Sserunkuma was the Ugandan national team star once again as made two assists and won a penalty to see his team beat Eritrea 3– 0 in the GOtv CECAFA Senior Challenge cup on Monday at Nairobi City Stadium.
Okwi beat Yonas Selemun on the right flank in the ninth minute before picking out Emmanuel Okwi with a pinpoint cross for the striker, who had missed the opening game, to tap in easily for the opener.
Okwi nearly made it two on the quarter hour mark after a fine run and a powerful shot on goal but Eritrean keeper Abdulahi Abdulrahman punched it back into play then Sserunkuma, on the follow up was flagged offside.
Three minutes later Sserunkuma was pushed in the box by Suarfael Tesfamekal giving the referee an easy decision to point to the spot and Hamis Kiiza stepped forward to send the Eritrean keeper the wrong way and net the second goal.
Eritrea’s Serak Beyene spurned his team’s first real chance when he tried to lob the well experienced Benjamin Ochan in the 36th minute; the keeper easily picked the ball and Eritrea was made to pay two minutes later when Sserunkuma burst forward with pace to release Okwi for another easy tap in.
Serak did get another chance in the second half after a rare blunder from the Ugandan defence but he went for a shot from the edge of the box which proved to be the wrong decision as the ball flew high and wide.
Eritrea created another opening in the 75th minute with Muner Ahmed racing in to meet a long searching pass from hiss defence but Ochan went down well to clear the goal bound shot and as the game headed to the end, Sserunkuma broke free but his first – time shot bounced off the cross bar.
The result sees Uganda go jointly top with Sudan on six points after two matches and assures both teams of a place in the quarter finals ahead of their meeting in the final Group C matches.
