Gor Mahia custodian Phillip Ivo Mapunda is grateful that the Tanzanian national team head Coach Kim Poulsen entrusted him with goal-protection responsibility in the GOtv Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup.
“I am greatly humbled that coach Poulsen has selected me to start in all four matches and I promise to commit myself in ensuring that we impress in the tournament,” said Mapunda.
“It is always a honour to don national colours and I am really proud to have been among those selected to represent the country,” he said.
Mapunda, who has in the past played for Bandari FC, now says he’s looking forward to the semi-final clash with Kenya’s Harambee Stars.
“The fact that I play for a Kenyan club makes me look forward to the match, because it has a sentimental bearing,” he said.
“I know it will not be an easy match, but I believe we are up to task and we shall give the Kenyans a run for their money.”
The match will be played on Tuesday at the Kenyatta Stadium, in Machakos.
