Uganda’s League champions KCCA FC and URA FC have been invited to take part in the Mapinduzi Cup slated for January 1-13 in Zanzibar.

Edgar Watson, the FA Chief Executive Officer, disclosed that they had received communication from the Zanzibar Football Association (ZFA) requesting that the two top Ugandan clubs take part in the event.

When contacted, KCCA FC Secretary, David Tamale, confirmed that their club will participate in the tournament.

“This event will also help us prepare the team well for the second round of the FUFA Super League and also the 2014 Africa Champions League,” added Tamale, who also disclosed the organisers will meet part of the costs for the foreign teams.

The annual tournament, which coincides with independence celebrations in Zanzibar, will attract teams from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zanzibar.

Farouk Karim, the competition’s communications officer, told reporters on Monday afternoon that the event will start with two matches on January 1 with KMKM hosting KCCA FC, while Simba SC (Tanzania) face Kenya’s Cup winners AFC Leopards.

“All preliminary matches will be played at Amani and Gombani Stadiums,” added Karim.

He said that the quarterfinals will be staged on January 8, with semi and finals taking place on January 10 and January 13 respectively.

The other teams taking part in the competition include FC Combine (Zanzibar), Young Africans (Tanzania), Tusker FC (Kenya), URA (Uganda), Chuoni FC (Zanzibar), Mbeya City (Tanzania), Combine FC (Zanzibar), and defending champions Azam FC (Tanzania).
