Members of Parliament from the ruling NRM party in Lango sub region have asked President Yoweri Museveni to expedite fulfillment of pledges made to their constituents prior to the 2011 general elections.
During the period and in subsequent visits to the region, President Yoweri Museveni committed himself on a number of pledges which however remain unfulfilled to date.
Notably among them is the proposed establishment of an Airfield in the region, upgrading Lira-Aduku –Apac to Masindi port highway to Tarmac, Construction of Akii-Bua International Stadium, and Building modern houses for clan heads among others.
Currently Lira town has no air field after the huge part of land housing the existing one was sold to private developers. Meanwhile The 140 Km highway stretching from Lira town via Aduku to Masindi Port has remained impassable over the years.
The Leaders who held a meeting with the president at State House Nakasero in Kampala last evening demanded that all outstanding pledges be cleared. The group was led by Erute South County Mp Sam Engola.
Ajuri County Mp Denis Hamson Obua told local media that the meeting was used to follow up on the status of the outstanding pledges and a list of the same was submitted to the President.
The members also asked president to consider distributing iron sheets to the 152 clan heads in Lango, establish Lira University of Science and technology and Kazibwe Girls School in Dokolo district, Obua who also doubles as the spokesperson of Lango Parliamentary Forum explains.
The visit drew positive reactions from the populace in lango. Norman Okullu, a resident of Adyel Division says he is pleased that the leaders are following up the outstanding presidential pledges. Another resident Ibrahim Okello joins the legislators in asking president Museveni to clear his commitments to the people of Lango.
The Minister of state for Northern Uganda Rebecca Otengo, Minister of state for micro finance Caroline Okao, Erute North Mp Geoffrey Omara Adigi, Kyoga county Mp Anthony Okello, Kwania county Mp Tonny Ayoo and Mp Annet Okwenye attended the meeting.
Others include Eng.Dr.Micheal Moses Odongo who represented Lango paramount chief.
The President also urged the leaders to put more emphasis on the social services like the state of roads, electricity, health, education and agriculture at district level.
