Dr. David Basangwa, the executive director Butabika Hospital has said that Mental illness is on the rise at the hospital.
While appearing before the public accounts committee to answer the Audit queries, Dr. David said that the hospital receives 8 to 15 patients on a daily basis compared to the 8 to 10 patients they used to receive the past few years.
He attributed the high levels of mental illness to alcohol, drug abuse,Malaria, HIV/AIDS and psychological torture.
He further revealed that the patients escape from hospital because they were taken there against their will.
“Many of the patients think the people who take them to Butabika hospital are against them while others don’t believe they are sick and need help.”
He however assured the committee that everything is being done to treat the patients and to stop them from escaping.
