Police Officers Remanded Over Death Of Suspect

Baker Rwatooro, the Soroti chief Magistrate has remanded two police officers, a Gombolola internal security officer and senior clinical officer to prison in connection to the death of a suspect at Kyere police post.

The suspects are James Ajotu and Emmanuel Enyutu, both cops at Kyere Police post; David Ekelu, the GISO Kyere Sub County and the in charge Kateta Health centre III James Oluka.

They appeared Baker Rwatooro, the Soroti chief Magistrate on Friday. Prosecution led by Jonathan Okello, the Soroti Resident state Attorney told court that on January 12, 2014 while at Kyere police post in Serere district the suspects murdered Paul Opolot.

Oploto’s body was found hanging on a rope in the police cells after he was arrested and detained for alleged defilement. It is alleged that the suspects ganged up and beat up Opolot during his arrest on January 12, 2014. However, a postmortem report shows that the neck of the deceased was twisted.

The suspects are suspected to have connived with James Oluka, the in charge Kateta Health center III to cover up the murder of Opolot. Rwatooro remanded the suspects to February 7, 2014 when their case will come up for mention.
