Wasswa Hungry For CHAN Success

WasswaExperienced Ugandan defender Hassan Wasswa Mawanda has said he is hungry to win the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) trophy.

“I was the skipper when the team qualified for CHAN last year and captained the team to victory in the 2012 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup. Now I want to be part of this group that can win the CHAN trophy,” Wasswa said in an interview at the OT International Airport in Johannesburg this morning.

The KCCA FC player who has played professional football in Ethiopia, South Africa and Turkey said although he is aware of the competition expected at the Championship, they have trained hard and will be on a serious mission.

Wasswa who recently returned from a failed move to a Vietnam team said he is optimistic they will qualify from the Group.

“There is no team in this tournament that is weak and therefore we give all teams respect, but we think we have what it takes to perform well,” added the defender who is often played in the defensive midfield as well.

The Cranes will have to be at their best in the Group against Zimbabwe, Morocco and Burkina Faso. In the 2011 Edition held in Khartoum, Sudan, the Cranes lost all the three matches and managed to score one goal through Saddam Juma who is not part of Micho’s team.

Team skipper Dennis Iguma who recovered few weeks ago after a three months lay off with injury is the only player on the Ugandan team who featured in the squad in the 2011 Edition.
