2 Arua Girls Arrested for Procuring Abortion

Arua Police has arrested two girls for procuring abortion using a local herb. The two are both residents of Kenya cell in Oli division, Arua municipality

One of the girls identified as Babura Likico (18) is charged with aiding the abortion by supplying the dangerous herb while the victim who has been granted police bond is admitted at Arua regional referral hospital in a critical condition.

Josephine Angucia, the police spokesperson for West Nile says two other accomplices are on the run. They include the boy who is suspected of impregnating the girl and one of her friends who was involved in procuring the herb.

She says according to the plan, of the two girls who gave the local herb locally known as “etokobi” told the victim that she would get no side effect after the pregnancy is terminated. To their dismay however, the girl bled excessively forcing her to share her ordeal with a sister.

Angucia says eventually the matter was reported to Arua central police station leading to the arrests.

She says the victim will be charged with abortion as soon as she recovers. Her accomplices will be charged with aiding abortion.

According to The State of Uganda’s Population Report, about 755,000 women get unintended pregnancies each year and many end up having unsafe abortions.

Abortion is illegal in Uganda and any person who, with intent, procures an abortion is subjected to imprisonment for 14 years.
